Following 10 days of unsettled weather in the wake of Cyclone Pam, Nasa will make its second attempt to launch its heavy-lift super pressure balloon from Wanaka Airport this morning.

Nasa balloon programme office chief Debbie Fairbrother was ''optimistic'' the low level and surface winds would be acceptable for a lift-off by the giant balloon between 8.30am and 11am.

The Hawea Flat side of the Clutha River, above the Red Bridge, or Mt Iron are expected to be the best viewing spots.
