This is why you should never ever have sex in a pool or in the ocean
Sometimes we can get caught up in the moment and be tempted to get a bit freaky in the swimming pool, spa, or ocean.
But you might want to think twice about that.
Especially when it comes to pools.
Dr Sherry Ross, an obstetrician-gynecologist, says that harsh chemicals in pools are extremely bad for your vaginal health, as chlorine washes away the good bacteria you're destined to get an infection.
And no, saltwater pools are not better.
"Salt water pools would seem safer but there is still exposure to harmful chemicals and unwelcome bacteria," says Dr Ross.
Furthermore, having intercourse in a spa exposes yourself to getting folliculitis.
Folliculitis is an infection in the hair follicles due to an overgrowth of bacteria in warm bodies of water.
And even though spas are full of chlorine, heat = bacteria, regardless.
So what about the ocean?
Well, we now know chlorine kills bacteria.
But in an ocean, lake, or other body of water, there is no chlorine.
So you’re basically swimming in a giant bath of bacteria.
"There is floating trash, oil spills, sewage runoff, sand, and other unwanted bacteria in open bodies of water", Dr. Ross tells us.
She continues that sand getting into your vagina can cause irritation to the vaginal skin, making you prone to yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis.
"If you envision sex in the water," she says, "it’s best and safer to have it in the shower.”
Good to know!
