A Florida mother is angry after her daughter was asked to take a quiz that she felt was both racist and inappropriate for children.
Valerie Kennel 11-year-old daughter Leah was given a “Lifeboat Quiz” which asked the kids to pick who lives and dies during a hypothetical sea disaster.
The students were told 15 people need to be saved but there are only nine spots on the boat. They then must choose between options including “the black guy,” “the Hispanic woman,” and “the pregnant woman.”
“It’s racist in every form,” Kennel told WFLA News in Tampa.
“This had nothing to do with history, nothing to do with it, and what is it teaching them?”
Valerie says Leah was given the quiz along with the rest of her Grade 6 class at Giunta Middle School in Riverview, Florida.
According to her, one student became so upset at the contents of the quiz he tore up his paper, and was subsequently reprimanded by the teacher.
A statement released by the Hillsborough County School District says the quiz was intended to promote team-building and cooperation, and was not intended to be racist.
“This school has a culturally diverse population,” the statement reads. “The test brought up good debates on how to work together, building relationships.”
