A video from YouTube channel TED-Ed has set out to explain the various physical and mental effects that a lack of sleep can actually have.

In the clip the publishers focus on Randy Garner, a 17-year-old who made the decision in 1965 to experiment what would happen if you went without sleep for an extended period of time. It didn’t take long for results to show as just over 24 hours into the task his focus was already worse and he lost the ability to identify certain objects through touch.

Despite persevering Randy was considerably more irritable by the third day and also became more uncoordinated, going on to have issues with short term memory loss as well as having hallucinations.

Thankfully, the experiment did not cause Randy any long-term harm.

Getting enough sleep is very important as it can be linked back to the likes of diabetes and obesity, and shockingly enough there’s even a genetic mutation called fatal familial insomnia where people are completely unable to sleep which usually leads to dementia and sometimes death.

Unsurprisingly the average adult requires 7-8 hours of sleep per night, meanwhile children require a resounding 10 hours in comparison.
