Elvis' granddaughter Riley Keough unveils sneak peek at 'Elvis' movie at MTV Movie & TV Awards
Riley Keough introduced a sneak peek of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis at the MTV Movie and TV Awards.
The Daisy Jones and the Six’ star and granddaughter of the film’s protagonist Elvis Presley - took to the stage at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica to remember the late King of Rock and Roll before sharing the clip.
The 33-year-old actress told the audience: "In 1954, a young man from Mississippi walked into Sun Records and change music forever. That man was my grandfather. And though I never got the chance to meet him, I grew up in a world that his existence had profoundly shaped.”
Riley praised the “visual genius” of the movie’s creator, Luhrmann, and lead star Austin Butler's “mesmerising performance” as the Suspicious Minds hitmaker.
She continued: "To capture an iconic figure like Elvis, but thankfully, the visual genius Baz Luhrmann was up to the task. Seeing my family history brought to life through Austin Butler's mesmerising performance was an incredibly emotional experience and I feel honoured to have this story in his hands."
Riley’s mom, Lisa Marie Presley - whose mother Priscilla was married to Elvis between 1967 and 1973 - called the biopic “nothing short of spectacular”.
The 54-year-old actress - who also has 13-year-old twins Harper and Finley - said: "However, that being said, I do want to take a moment to let you know that I have seen Baz Luhrmann's movie Elvis twice now, and let me tell you that it is nothing short of spectacular. Absolutely exquisite.
"Austin Butler channelled and embodied my father’s heart and soul beautifully. In my humble opinion, his performance is unprecedented and FINALLY done accurately and respectfully. (If he doesn’t get an Oscar for this, I will eat my own foot, haha.)
"You can feel and witness Baz’s pure love, care, and respect for my father throughout this beautiful film, and it is finally something that myself and my children and their children can be proud of forever. What moved me to tears as well was watching Riley and Harper, and Finley afterwards, all 3 visibly overwhelmed in the best way possible way, and so filled with pride about their grandfather and his legacy in a way that I have not previously experienced."
Elvis hits cinemas in New Zealand on June 23.
Elsewhere at the MTV Movie & TV Awards Jennifer Lopez broke down in tears as she was honoured with the Generation Award.
The Marry Me star - whose soundtrack to the rom-com, On My Way, also nabbed Best Song - got emotional collecting the special award.
At the Vanessa Hudgens-hosted bash, the 52-year-old singer-and-actress thanked both those who were huge supporters and sceptical of her talents.
The On The Floor hitmaker also thanked her fiance Ben Affleck, 49, and her 14-year-old twins Emme and Max - whom she has with ex-husband Marc Anthony.
She began: "I want to thank the people who gave me joy and the ones who broke my heart.
The ones who were true and the ones who lied to me. I want to thank true love and I want to thank the way I lied to myself—because that’s how I knew I could grow.
"I want to thank disappointment and failure for teaching me to be strong and my children for teaching me to love."
She continued: "I want to thank all the people who told me, to my face or when I wasn’t in the room, that I couldn’t do this. I really don’t think I could have done it without you."
Jennifer added: "It is an honour to be able to connect with audiences and you guys, and because of you I will continue to do justice to that honour as long as I am around."
The Second Act star quipped: "Thank you so much. And to Ben and everyone at home, waiting for me to have dinner. I will be home by 7!"
The Generation Award is given to “beloved actors whose diverse contributions to both film and television have turned them into household names.”
