Eat your way happy to International Happiness Day
International Day of Happiness is just around the corner - celebrated globally on March 20th.
Organised by the United Nations, it serves to remind us that being happy is a human right and worth celebrating — and if you’re not already happy on this day, the celebrations may change that!
There's no denying that the past couple of years have really tested our happiness. With our world facing unprecedented challenges, wellbeing matters more than ever.
Associate Professor Tamlin Conner, from the Department of Psychology at University of Otago, said, “In my research, I have found that the relationship between fruits and vegetables, and the practice of eating ‘5-a-day’ and happiness is fairly strong. This relationship is even more pronounced when eating raw fruits and vegetables.Â
“In a study led by my students, there is a lot of evidence to suggest raw fruit and vegetables contribute to happiness the most, however, an increase of all fruits and vegetables (either cooked or raw) into the diet alongside a healthy diet will help hit the right balance."
