'Who's Line Is It, Anyway' comedian Colin Mochrie opens up about his transgender daughter

Comedian Colin Mochrie has opened up about his transgender daughter, Kinley.

The Who's Line Is It, Anyway? star gave a shout-out to the elderly folk in his family, who have been accepting of Kinley's recent transition, according to the Daily Mail.

"My 90-yr-old mother-in-law and 87-yr-old mother love and acceptance of our trans daughter warms me. Wonder why some who are younger can't," (sic) he wrote on Twitter.

The tweet received over 14,000 likes.

He also revealed how he's comfortable in his new role as transgender advocate and how he even helped select Kinley's new name. 

Scottish-born Mochrie said he decided to open up because there was "a lot of negativity" on the social media network that day.

"I thought this would be a nice little thing about acceptance from Kinley’s grandparents," he told ET Canada. "I didn't expect it to blow up the way it did."

But he's happy with his new role as transgender community champion.

"I think I've gotten like 2,000 followers over the last day.... It's pretty cool," he told the Huffington Post Canada. "If I can do something to help anyone who is perceived as different, then I'm always there. I truly don't understand prejudices against colour, religion or gender or sexuality because I've met (jerks) of every race, creed and culture and I've met wonderful people from the same."

He said his tweet was partly prompted by the incoming president, Donald Trump, and some of the rhetoric that surrounded his campaign.

Kinley, 26, who announced her transition in April, says she was touched by the shout-out.

"To have something explicitly put out there that says 'We love our child, we love our daughter,' yeah, that is really lovely."

Kinley says the hardest part about her transition for the family was probably getting accustomed to her new name. Kinley, who was born Luke, said she made picking a new name a family event. 

"I asked them what name they would give me now, and they came back with a list of about 20 names," she said. "We slowly weeded it down to about five, and, I don't know, there was something about Kinley."

She added that the name was Irish, which reflected their Irish roots. 

The comedian admits that he and his wife have had trouble using the correct pronoun.

"We knew Luke for 26 years so it was very hard to quickly change that. And even now, there's still times when we slip," he said. 

But he says that his daughter's name is the main thing that's changed.  'This is my child, this is the exact same person, with a new coat.' he said. He told Huffington Post Canada that Kinley is taking hormones.
