One of TVNZ's most popular reporters Matt McLean is leaving the network after nine years.

McLean first arrived at the national broadcaster in 2007 to work on Breakfast, saying: "I looked like a high school student who had borrowed his dad's suit for the school play, but it was genuinely the culmination of a life-long dream."

Based in Wellington for several years, he went on to work for Close Up before moving up to Auckland and joining the One News team on TVNZ's flagship 6pm bulletin.

McLean is leaving the network to try his luck overseas, heading to London.

"It has honestly been the most incredible time of my life. I love meeting people and telling stories, and the opportunity to do that on a daily basis has been nothing short of amazing."
