A new lawsuit filed by Jim Carrey's late girlfriend's husband, Mark Burton, claims the comedian illegally obtained prescription drugs for Cathriona White.
Irishwoman White, an actress herself, was found dead in her home in September 2015 after overdosing on prescription pills, including Ambien, Percocet and Poprandol.
In court papers filed in the Superior Court of California, her estranged husband, Mark Burton, whom she married in January 2013 in Las Vegas, claims that Carrey illegally obtained the drugs under the alias name of Arthur King, and gave them to White, which he considers to be tantamount to wrongful death.
White and Carrey reportedly split up a few days before her death, purportedly with her leaving a note behind about it, as well as a longer note which contained her wishes once she had passed away.
Among numerous claims, Burton also believes that Carrey sent here a text message after her death to cover up the fact he'd got the drugs for her.
"On information and belief, after White committed suicide, and in an effort to cover-up his conduct and complicity in her death, Carrey sent a bogus text message on September 27, 2015 to White (who was already deceased) pretending as though he had misplaced the drugs and insinuating ... White may have taken them from Carrey."
When news of White's death broke, Carrey released an emotional statement. "I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona...She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt."
