In a moment we could only dream about, the Oscar winner excitedly walked up to Queen Elizabeth - who remained seated in her chair - before bending down to shake her hand.

Despite the monarch smiling politely during the encounter, royal protocol states that people should wait to be introduced to the Queen before speaking to her, let alone touching her!

Obviously Sarandon was probably unaware of the tradition, which would explain the Queen's bemused expression afterwards.
