New Zealand comedy legend Mike King hit an unfortunate snag while preparing for his recent marriage.

As revealed in this week's edition of Woman's Day, King went to collect his marriage license in Rarotonga when he realized neither he nor his bride had their birth certificates.

"We freaked out. The birth certificates were back in Auckland, but we didn't know where, so we couldn't ask anyone to find them for us," he said.

"For a minute, it looked like there wouldn't be a wedding. We were heartbroken."

Fortunately for King, he was able to call on his friend, newsreader Simon Dallow, who stood in line for two hours at Internal Affairs to collect replacement documents.

Thanks to Dallow, King was able to wed his partner of eight years Joanna Methven. '

The comedian describes Dallow, TVNZ's One News presenter, as his "go-to guy".

"He's one of the few blokes in the world that I've been able to talk to openly about my depression with, but this was the biggest thing he's ever done for me."

The two-hour wait nearly made Dallow miss the news, but it did earn him the role of best man for the wedding when he arrived with the documents.

The intimate wedding had only five guests, as well as King and Methven's 23-month-old daughter Charlotte.

King and Methven run the mental-health charity Key to Life together, drawing on their own experiences with depression and addiction to help others.
