Smash and Grab at Napier Jeweller

Police are looking for three people who stole around $10,000 worth of jewellery in a smash and grab in central Napier early this morning.

The thieves smashed a front window of Michael Hill Jeweller on the corner of Emerson St and Market St at 3.30am this morning.

They smashed a display cabinet and took numerous watches and some bracelets. The haul is believed to be worth around $10,000.

Detective Sergeant John McCarthy said the three offenders were believed to be male, but they were heavily disguised. They were in the store for only a matter of minutes.

One of them was wearing a black sweatshirt.

The thieves ran from the shop down Market St towards Cathedral Lane, dropping a few items along the way. Police are currently viewing CCTV footage from the area.

Mr McCarthy said police were keen to hear about anyone selling cheap watches or jewellery including on social media sites.

“These thieves may be trying to get rid of the stolen items and we know that often they will use Facebook or other media sites to sell them. If anyone comes across items that may have come from this burglary, they should contact police immediately,” Mr McCarthy said.

The stolen items were expensive and would attract attention. The shop is currently compiling a list of the pieces that were taken.
