What you should know about the Breast Cancer Foundation's #GiveUsOurMammograms campaign
During the Covid-19 lockdowns over the last few years, many Kiwi women missed out on getting a mammogram – which has proven to be vital in the early detection of breast cancer, and can even save lives - done.
Breast Cancer Foundation CEO Ah-Lee Rayney caught up with Megan on The Hits 3PM Pick Up to talk about a new campaign they have launched #GiveUsOurMammograms to encourage women and make sure they are able to get back in to have their breasts checked.
"During Covid Alert Level Four, all mammograms were canceled," Ah-Lee explained, "and under Alert Level Three they ran at reduced capacity.
So what this means is there are 50,000 women out there that are now currently over-due their mammograms.”
"That means there could be 300 women [based on the statistics] that have breast cancer right now and they don’t know about it."
As for the #GiveUsOurMammograms campaign itself, the Breast Cancer Foundation is asking the government to fund ways to make getting a mammogram to check easier and faster for those women who have missed out.
