Watch the epic moments from The Hits' mascot race at the Warriors' game
Could an early retirement be looming for the beloved Hit-o-potamus? After the chaos that unfolded at The Hits Mascot Race this year ... we’ll have to wait and see.
Last year, we introduced a new mascot, The Hit-o-potamus to our team, debuting in an epic showdown at the first-ever mascot race.
Held during halftime at a One New Zealand Warriors game, this event saw 21 of New Zealand's finest mascots battle it out for the title of the fastest Kiwi mascot.
In a display of strength and determination, the Hit-o-potamus emerged victorious, claiming glory in the race! But what happened this year, was a little different ...
With anticipation growing, Jono and Ben set out to find the perfect runner to represent The Hits this year, ultimately selecting lucky listener, Claire. Standing on the field alongside 19 other mascots on game night, Claire proudly donned the hippo costume, ready to take on the challenge.
Unfortunately, the legacy was short-lived, with the Hit-o-potamus taking out the triumphant title of 2024’s slowest Mascot.
Still, in great spirits, Claire took the loss very well, reminding us that “it’s not always about winning ... it’s about living life to the fullest.”
Reflecting on the antics of 2023, which included an array of drama with Auckland Rugby's Gull still reeling from the unexpected ambush from its colleague Potato, Gull was sure to make a comeback this year.
All eyes were on the seagull as the countdown began! 3... 2... and Gull had taken off early, unfortunately not redeeming himself after last year's mishap.
With 18 mascots left in the running, Dole’s Peneloppe Pineapple showed impressive speed and proved itself as a strong contender.
As the finish line approached, Snow Planet’s Big Al seemed destined for victory. But in a dramatic turn of events, the poor fella took a tumble just moments before crossing the finish line! It was a sad day for Snow Planet.
Unexpectedly, Steely Dan from Counties Manukau Football Union seized the moment, sprinting across the finish line and claiming all glory with the title of 2024’s fastest mascot now under their belt.
And then of course, The Hits’ Hit-o-potamus crossed the finish line at the bottom of the table.
Don’t worry though, the Hit-o-potamus has already started training for their comeback next year.
