Auckland woman Jane O'Brien bought her burger from McDonald's Lincoln Road, Henderson and took it back to her work.

After biting into the burger she realised something wasn't quite right.

Speaking to ONE News she said:  "I took it back to the office and sat down at my desk, chewed it, took it out of my mouth, that's gum, that's got to be gum."

After ringing the store immediately, she was told if she took it back to them they would give her a replacement burger.

"I'm a germ-phobia and to think I had that in my mouth, that's pretty gross."

She says she's put off McDonald's and is never going there again.

McDonald's communication manager Kim Bartlett told ONE News McDonald's took these matters very seriously and took full responsibility - if the mistake actually occurred.

"We can track right back to when the burger was being made," Ms Bartlett said.

"Our crew aren't even allowed to chew gum on the floor, that's our policy."

The burger will go through testing.
