Have you ever noticed how Jerry Seinfeld has never played in New Zealand?
Sorry, there's no snappy punchline here, but comedy fans will be laughing tears of joy with the news that Seinfeld will finally perform here next year.
No joke.
The iconic comedian and undisputed master of observation will play one show at Auckland's Vector Arena on Saturday, August 12.
In the press release announcing the show Seinfeld said he was looking forward to the gig.
"New Zealand and Australia may be far in miles but I feel very close to the people because of our mutual comedy connection. I couldn't be more excited about seeing everyone there."
For Seinfeld no topic is too small to be examined at length, poked at and ridiculed. His fascination with the minutiae of everyday life and the odd conventions of society has powered his comedy for over 30 years.
His groundbreaking sitcom Seinfeld, a fictionalised account of his life as a stand-up comedian in the 90s, is regularly hailed as one of the greatest television shows of all time.
It ran for nine seasons and mined comedy gold out of mundane, every day topics like waiting for a table in a Chinese restaurant, getting soup for lunch and losing your car in a mall car park.
After ending the sitcom at its height he embarked on an almost-world-tour - sadly he didn't make it here - to retire his Seinfeld stand-up material with I'm Telling You for the Last Time.
He then wrote a best seller Seinlanguage, wrote, voiced and produced an animated film Bee Movie and now hosts the popular, and very funny, web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
Â
The 20 minute online show sees Seinfeld taking fellow comedians like Louis CK, Jimmy Fallon and Sarah Silverman out for coffee and then quizzing them on their muse and personal approach to comedy.
Famed for his perfectionist approach to his routine, Seinfeld has been performing stand-up regularly. This year he has held a year-long residency at the Beacon Theatre in his home town of New York. The shows have received rave reviews with Rolling Stone declaring he'd "killed it".
General public tickets for the Vector Arena show go on sale 10am, Monday 14 November through Ticketmaster.
