A 6.0 magnitude earthquake near wanaka, described as being 'severe' has been reported by Geonet.

The earthquake struck at 2.29 PM and was at a shallow depth of 5KM.

The earthquake follows a 3.2 magnitude earthquake that shook Wellington earlier today.

Queenstown Lakes Deputy Mayor, Lyall Cocks was at the golf club in Wanaka when it hit.

"There's no obvious damage, there's no poles down or nothing like that.

"Like I say, it was a rolling earthquake."

Cocks says he's just about to head into town to see if there's any damage.

Wanaka has had two "moderate" aftershocks (magnitude 3.4 & 3.5) in the past 30 minutes.
