People were seen "running for their lives" after an explosion inside a New York subway station.

The 27-year-old suspect, Akayed Ullah had strapped a pipe bomb to himself in what is being called by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, an "attempted terrorist attack".

Four people have been left injured by the "low-tech device", including Ullah who is in the custody of police and is suffering from burns to his abdomen and hands at Bellevue Hospital.

Ullah is reported to be a Bangladeshi national, living in the US for the last seven years.

The three civilians near the explosion are suffering from "non-life threatening" injuries, including ringing in their ears.

The explosion, which went off near Time Square, is thought to have gone off prematurely.
