After a brief hiatus following her 2011 sophomore album ‘Cat & Bird’, Anna Coddington is making a strong return to the spotlight this year with a string of bold new singles. Having spent 2012 focused on writing, collaborating and extending her skill-set in all directions, this year she has shared the fruits of that labour.
Showcasing a notable development from the guitar-based, live band sound of her two albums, recent singles Bird In Hand and Make You Mine were produced by 2013 Taite Prize winning artist SJD. Bird In Hand is a lament that puts the haunting vocal centre stage over angular drums and delicate keys, while Make You Mine is a celebration of love and has a drum machine groove beautifully offset by the impeccable feel of Chris O'Connor on drums, and a catchy bass line played by Coddington herself.
Latest single The Runner, produced by Jeremy Toy (She’s So Rad, Opensouls), is a sassy, indie-pop song with a disco feel. It features Anna’s long-time collaborator Mike Hall on bass, with Cods herself manning all other instruments.
These singles follow early-2013 summer disco anthem Noise Control by Anna’s collab project Street Neighbourz, and are complimented by the different sound of Pushing On- a new Magik J (Dick Johnson) produced track featuring Anna on vocal duties.
Anna and Mike wowed audiences across New Zealand on the Make You Mine Tour over Sep/Oct with a show of instrument swapping, multi-tasking, and vocal harmonies, and shortly after this Anna attended the prestigious 2013 Silver Scroll Awards for songwriting where her song Bird In Hand was a top 5 contender.
Anna has plans for further collaborations, working toward her third album due out next year.
